MOSES LAKE — Thousands of rubber ducks will once again hit the water this summer during the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Columbia Basin’s June 14 Rubber Duck Regatta.
Organization director Brant Mayo said this is the second year the Boys and Girls Clubs is putting on the fundraiser.
“We had a successful event last year, so we thought we would bring it back,” said Mayo.
Ducks have numbers on them and will float around the Lazy River at the Surf ‘n Slide water park, located at 401 W. Fourth Ave in Moses Lake, he said.
The first duck to float all the way around will win the event’s grand prize of $1,500.
Other prizes include $1,000, an overnight stay and golf package for two at the Coeur d’Alene Resort and Seattle Mariners tickets.
Mayo said more than 50 other prizes will also be awarded during the event.
Tickets are $5, which gets you one duck. Twenty dollars gets you five ducks and $100 gets you 25 ducks, he said.
The regatta will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. this year, said Mayo.

“We’re trying something different this year,” he said. “We rented out the water park and the first 1,000 people get in free and can enjoy the park and watch the race.”
Mayo said prizes will be handed out that night. Mayo said proceeds from the regatta fund the club’s programs.
“This allows us to make sure we have plenty of staff, supplies and materials for the nearly 200 kids we see a day,” he said.
Mayo said it costs roughly $2,000 to run one child through the program each year. Holding fundraisers to help offset costs keeps membership fees down and affordable for families, he said.
“This issomething that helps us close that gap,” said Mayo.
Mayo said the organization sold just over 3,000 ducks last year. The goal this year is to sell 4,000, he said.
Tickets are available at both of the organization’s clubhouses, Mayo said.

The downtown Moses Lake clubhouse is located at 410 W. Third Ave. and the Larson clubhouse is located at 4306 Arnold Dr.
Horizon Credit Union branches in Moses Lake and Ephrata will also have tickets on hand, he said.
The Moses Lake branch is located at 1704 S. Clover Dr. and the Ephrata branch is located at 260 C St. SW.
Horizon is a major sponsor for the event this year, said Mayo.
Tickets can also be purchased at the Columbia Basin Herald, from 8-5 Monday through Friday, located at 813 W. Third Ave.
For more information, call 509-764-9694.

Construction on the new clubhouse for the Moses Lake Boys and Girls Club began this month, and the club supporters marked the occasion with a groundbreaking ceremony.

The new clubhouse, a $2.8 million project, will be next door to Park Orchard Elementary School, 417 Paxson Dr. A new clubhouse has been a dream for years, said P.J. De Benedetti, who’s on the fundraising committee. “We’re getting close now,” De Benedetti said Monday of the fundraising effort.

Completion could come by the end of 2013, De Benedetti said

The current clubhouse is on Third Street downtown, and that space just isn’t big enough any more, said Boys and Girls Club board member Don McGraw. The club has had to limit growth due to space issues, he said.

The bigger clubhouse will allow expansion and the addition of some new services, McGraw said. And construction is imminent.

“We’re shovel-ready. We’re ready to go,” said club Director Brant Mayo. Contractors are still working out the exact date, but the work begins in May, Mayo said.

The relationship between the Moses Lake School District and the club has been an important reason the new clubhouse is moving forward, De Benedetti said. The Boys and Girls Club will have access to school district property when school is closed, and the district will be able to use the clubhouse when Boys and Girls Club is closed, Mayo said.

The Boys and Girls Club helps out parents that, for whatever reason, can’t be home after school, and the club gives those families help staying on track, McGraw said.

The Moses Lake club has had a lot of support locally, McGraw said, and built good partnerships with local service organizations as well as the school district. Key support has come from local legislators, who helped obtain construction grants, he said.

State Rep. Judy Warnick, R-Moses Lake, said it was pretty easy to get support in the state Legislature, because the project had so much community support. The state can’t do it all, Warnick said, which is why the community is so important. “That sells it to me,” she said.

Currently the legislature is considering a $300,000 construction grant for the club for 2013, but that hasn’t been finalized, she said.

To complete the project, the Boys and Girls Club is trying to close the remaining funding gap.

“It’s been a long road. We’re not done yet,” Mayo said.

Any and all donations are accepted. “We’ve had large gifts and we’ve had small gifts, and they all help,” De Benedetti said. People can take donations to the current clubhouse, 410 West Third St., Moses Lake, or contact Mayo, 509-764-9694.

MOSES LAKE – A $15,000 grant brings the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Columbia Basin closer to building a new clubhouse, possibly this summer.

The Staples Foundation for Learning gave the grant to the clubs this week.

“This new facility will have a dedicated teen space,” commented Brant Mayo, the club’s executive director. “This will allow us to run new programs and services designed for the teen members.”

The existing downtown club on Third Avenue, in downtown Moses Lake, and a second location on Arnold Street, do not have space for teens.

“It is a demographic we want to have more impact with,” Mayo stated.

In both locations, activities are provided for more than 200 youth per day.

They also learn about character and leadership development, “while increasing their community service participation and future academic and employment opportunities,” he explained.

The grant application started with the manager of the Moses Lake Staples store, Kevin Donovan.

Staples supports the club with donations, but wanted to go further, Donovan explained.

“I wanted to do something more specific for the local club,” he said. “Hopefully, it will help them get a little closer to their goal, to building their new facility.”

Staples staff members bring their children to the club, he explained.

“We’re so excited to help Boys & Girls Clubs of the Columbia Basin make after-school programs that make a positive impact available to more youth throughout the community,” stated Amy Shanler, director of community relations for Staples.

“Staples Foundation is committed to supporting Boys & Girls Clubs of the Columbia Basin as they work hard to provide phenomenal academic and enrichment programs that help local youth reach their full potential,” she added.

Last year, the clubs started the public portion of their capital campaign to raise $1.5 million for its new clubhouse.

The site is located next to Park Orchard Elementary School, on Paxson Drive, in Moses Lake. The school is set to open this fall.

MOSES LAKE – Giggles and squeals of surprise mark Thursdays at the Boys & Girls Club on Arnold Drive.

Student teachers from Heritage University spend an hour each Thursday teaching children at the club about science.

Heritage adjunct John Bartkowski supervises the student teachers and gets a kick out of the lessons that present the wonders of science in a fun lesson.

“This is a unit on water,” Bartkowski said. Surface tension, buoyancy and other water-related lessons are all part of a semester of Thursdays spent at the club.

Bartkowski said Heritage has done science lessons with students in Moses Lake for the last three years but this is the first year it’s being done at the Boys & Girls Club.

“The benefit of having it here is that this is a much more conducive setting to separate the groups,” Bartkowski said.

For middle school students like Starr Hernandez, 13, of Moses Lake, the science lessons are a way to couple fun and learning.

“My favorite thing is to do the tests,” Hernandez said. “I’ve been coming for three weeks.”

Hernandez said she heard about the program from a student advisor at school.

“It sounded pretty cool and I wanted to join in,” Hernandez said.

For instructor Matt Wood, the class gives him a chance to work with students in the real world.

“My wife teaches and I love working with kids,” Wood said.

While earning his teaching certificate, Wood is also a substitute teacher.

He called the move toward becoming a teacher a “natural fit.”

“Last week, they did the Mentos in water,” Bartkowski said. “That is always fun.”
